In a time when environmental causes are getting noticed, it is important to raise awareness of each of the aspects that are affecting it and how to neutralize them. Electrosmog is definitely one of them, but we still have a challenge ahead: educating people on the matter and getting a real consensus meant to protect the environment while evolving technologically.

There’s not a single place in the globe that is electrosmog-free, not even the furthest places. We are carrying technologies with us everywhere, applying them to everything, and this is affecting several ecosystems and living creatures in many ways we are still not aware of. 

The ecosystem in which we live provides natural services for humans and all other species that are essential to our health, quality of life, and survival. Nowadays, our ecosystems are being threatened by several factors, like climate change, diseases, and pollution, including electrosmog, that is literally an invisible threat to us and our environment.

Electrosmog is not a widely known problem, and there are also many people who rather not believe that it is a real problem, claiming that there is not enough evidence to confirm its harmful effects.  These are just a couple of the many causes why electrosmog is not commonly mentioned as one of the many causes of environmental damage. But guess what? It might be one of the biggest problems we might face in the near future if we don’t start acting now. 

The electrosmog problem

We are constantly exposed to electromagnetic influences, our species evolved inside electromagnetic fields, and they protected the balance in our nature. Natural electromagnetic fields, like the ones produced by the earth, are harmless and even life-supporting.

But with the increasing use of electricity and technologies, our natural environment has evolved into a network of different radiation sources. This is what we call electrosmog, also known as Electropollution, electromagnetic pollution, or EMF Pollution. This term refers to all man-made electromagnetic radiation generated by all the devices and machinery that works using electricity. You can’t see it or physically perceive it, but Electrosmog is created like bubbles around the electronic devices and is present in our surroundings. There are ways to measure it with special equipment. 

Electrosmog has become a major public health concern, as it was classified as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B) by the IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) in 2011. Dr. Jonathan Samet (University of Southern California, USA), overall Chairman of the Working Group, indicated that “the evidence, while still accumulating, is strong enough to support a conclusion and the 2B classification. The conclusion means that there could be some risk, and therefore we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk.”

The environmental impact of electrosmog

The levels of static, electric, and magnetic fields in our environment have increased steadily over the past 50-100 years due to our increasing use of electricity. EMF emissions from man-made sources now exceed those from natural fields and are detectable everywhere in the world. Environmental EMF levels are still increasing as we keep developing major projects such as high voltage transmission lines, undersea power cables, radars, telecommunications and broadcast transmitters, and new transportation systems.

Electromagnetic pollution affects various elements of the environment, including all living organisms, no matter how small or big they are. For example, in the report The impacts of artificial Electromagnetic Radiation on wildlife (flora and fauna) made by the EKLIPSE Project, was stated that in plants (mainly angiosperms) “Significant changes have been demonstrated at cellular and molecular levels.” 

“Changes in oxidative metabolism are quite often reported: increase in peroxidase activity, membrane state. Exposure to low level of 900 MHz (10 min, 5 V/m) caused a rapid increase in stress-related transcript accumulation in tomato… Terpene emission was reported to be enhanced by EMR and could also be considered as a marker of stress perception”, assert the report.

The presence of electrosmog is causing several problems in humans too, including a significant increase in the number of electrohypersensitive people, who are feeling actual physical symptoms due to the constant exposure to it. Children are also severely affected by electrosmog. Considering that their immune system, bones, and tissues are weaker and more sensitive, they receive a higher impact. It has been proven that children exposed to radiofrequency during pregnancy and their first years of life are prone to develop behavior and attention problems.

Several species are also being affected

As we explained in our article The bees are disappearing: Why should you be worried about this?, bees, the top important animal for human and many species sustainability, are endangered and one of the main causes is electrosmog. They, like many other animals, are very sensitive to EMF and, according to studies, show a significant change of behavior when exposed. 

Also, in a report made by the European Commission, was found that there was a correlation between EMF exposure and the disappearance of some bird species in certain areas, like the house sparrow population in urban areas. They stated that studies have given an indication that exposure of wild birds to EMF can, under certain circumstances, change their behavior, reproductive success, growth and development, physiology and endocrinology, and/or the parameters of oxidative stress.

According to the paper The Influence of Electromagnetic Pollution on Living Organisms: Historical Trends and Forecasting Changes, the Land Snail is another animal that generated particular interest in researchers,  as they were concerned with the resting potential of its nerve cells when exposed to magnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation. “It was found that hyperpolarization of nerve cells results in changes in resting potential… this effect was only observed in the case of electromagnetic fields.” 

The Clawed Frog also helped in numerous attempts to investigate the influence of electromagnetic fields in living organisms. The same paper states that, in 2010, Severini conducted research on the influence of weak electromagnetic fields on this frog development capacity. In the experiment, tadpoles were exposed to electromagnetic field of frequency of 50 Hz and the intensity within the range from 50.76 A·m−1 to 60.69 A·m−1 for 60 days. As a result, it was observed that the average growth rate of exposed individuals decreased in comparison with a control group.

Other species, including bacterias, plants, and mammals are actively being studied to understand the non-thermal effects EMF could have in their development, bodily functions, and behaviors in the short and long term. 

Sustainable technologies

To fight the threats our environment is facing now, we have been using the sustainability concept; which focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Under this concept, we have started building, manufacturing, eating, and producing sustainably; but in the case of technology, which is indeed being used in many of these sustainable activities, how do we make it “sustainable”?

First, it is important to understand that everything that uses electricity is emitting radiation, no matter what its purpose is. Also, we have to be aware that the impact of many devices working at the same time is bigger than a single device working alone. Lastly, as we are connecting more and more things to the internet and to each other, we have to highlight that one of the main sources of EMF pollution is telecommunications, and the many WiFi signals present everywhere.

Having that in mind, how do we make our technologies more sustainable without regressing? Is there a way to stop electrosmog without stopping the use and development of technologies? Fortunately, there is a way and we are still on time to take action. 

For decades, many studies have shown the potential dangers of electrosmog exposure in humans, animals, and the environment itself, but, in spite of that, there is a lack of consensus in the scientific community, as well as health professionals, governments, and industries. This lack of consensus has delayed a mutual agreement in creating healthier, cleaner, and friendlier standards for new technologies, which is completely possible. 

Nowadays, there are tests and specific norms that regulate the manufacture of certain devices, such as the SAR test in cellphones. But the permitted levels of radiation considered in the actual norms are high enough to cause biological effects and might cause important long-term effects according to the Reported Biological Effects from Radiofrequency Radiation at Low-Intensity Exposure chart, released by the Bioinitiative report. 

However, this is not only about changing the levels currently allowed in SAR tests for cell phones, the core problem is related to a lack of understanding regarding the athermic effects of near-field exposure from electronic devices. There’s also a common misunderstanding related to the subtle electromagnetic disturbances from far-field exposure, which is the microwave radiation on the background, or the so-called background levels. We need to consider new standard tests including this type of Electromagnetic exposure too. 

This means that, for this sustainable clean technologies standard we are looking for, the first thing we have to achieve is a real awareness in all competent parts to review the norms and current standards established for those technologies we use. After that, we have to work on creating new technologies or solutions to make them human and environment friendly. In short, we have to create devices that are harmless in the short and long term. 

Our proposed solutions 

At NOXTAK, we have been researching for years the EMF pollution phenomenon and its repercussions on health, the environment, and even in the many devices that we generally use. In those years of study and experimentation, we created SPIRO: the only scientifically proven, certified, and non-blocking solution that filters artificial EMF and makes it behave just as the natural fields produced by the earth, eliminating the harmful effects of electrosmog.

In other words, it is an association that, in its own way, protects technologies and controls electrosmog under a non-blocking approach.”

Machado also claimed that the purpose of this association is to promote an electrosmog-free world through the creation of electro-healthy spaces and technologies. “We also want to protect from electrosmog the largest number of apiaries in the world in the shortest time possible and promote a global census of EHS (Electrohypersensitivity), as well as promote case studies of passive protection EHE (Electro-Healthy Environment) to people with EHS through of clean technologies certified EHD (Electro-Healthy Device).”

NOXTAK is also impulsung the GEMS project, which is dedicated to promote and install a new global EMF monitoring system to measure the mentioned far-field exposure everywhere. This will help in future long-term environmental studies that will help us understand the real threat this type of artificial radiation is to the delicate balance of our natural ecosystems and all species.

One of the biggest challenges we have ahead is creating a new standard that all tech manufacturers follow, a clean technology vision that is eco-friendly, human friendly, and helps achieve Electrosmog Free Environments. The BEEM project is precisely created with that purpose. Our CEO, Joaquín Machado, talks about this new project in partnership with NOXTAK.


We are irremediably attached to technologies. We use several devices at home, our offices, even on the go, and every day more and more of those devices are connected to a WiFi or a Telecom network, even kitchen appliances. This is our daily life, but we are continuously being harmed by the emissions generated by those devices without notice. 

NOXTAK was born to create solutions to this growing electrosmog problem. The SPIRO technology, our scientifically proven and certified electrosmog-filtering solution, was the product of years of investigation and trials. We are using it as a pillar component to create more targeted solutions, such as electro-clean/electro-healthy technologies. What’s BEEM?

BEEM is a partner of NOXTAK. It’s a technology manufacturer that uses the SPIRO license to develop its own electronic devices, making them electromagnetically clean. BEEM’s purpose is to create new technologies that eventually become a benchmark in efficiency, eco-friendly materials, and electrosmog-free emissions.

The name BEEM is a compound of BEAM and BEE. Bees are an endangered species, and one of the causes of their extinction is electromagnetic pollution, so bees were one of the main inspirations to create this brand. In short, BEEM is a brand built to protect us, our environment, bees, and many other endangered species. 

What’s does BEEM do?

BEEM recollects all the understanding in electronics from the last decades and combines with all the learning on electromagnetic exposure and work to put all these principles, engineering designs, patented technology, and vision of tech recycling to produce a set of WIFI and Telecommunication Devices for Home and Offices certified with the latest technological standards free of electrosmog emissions. 

What makes BEEM different is that it’s the first brand that uses and materializes the electro-clean concept. Using the SPIRO technology, BEEM guarantees electrosmog-free devices, which means that their constant use will be completely harmless to people and the environment.

How do BEEM devices work?

It takes more than soil, water, and sunshine to make the world green; the bees also have a vital role in nature. But electrosmog, among other things, is endangering them. Have you thought about how our world would be without bees? 


The bees have an amazingly important role in nature. They pollinate 70 of the around 100 crop species that feed 90% of the world. Without bees, we may lose all the plants that bees pollinate, all of the animals that eat those plants, and so on up the food chain. This means our world could struggle to sustain the global human population and our supermarkets would have half the amount of fruit and vegetables.

Nowadays, bee populations around the world are in decline. Possible reasons include the loss of flower meadows, the crab-like varroa mite that feasts on their blood, climate change, the use of pesticides, and electromagnetic (EMF) pollution. Yes, electrosmog is playing a big role in this great loss, whether you believe it or not.

A world without bees would be chaotic. We don’t have the technology to do what bees do, and in case we get it, it would cost trillions to make it work. So losing bees is, literally, a matter of life or death. So how can we stop this from happening? Is there a way to protect our top important animal? 

The reasons why bees are the top important animal in nature

As we previously mentioned, bees are the top pollinators in nature. Most plants require the transfer of pollen from the male part of the flower (the anther) to the female part (the stigma). As bees move from flower to flower in search of nectar, they leave behind grains of pollen on the sticky surface, allowing plants to grow and produce food.

Bees pollinate billions of plants each year, including millions of agricultural crops. In fact, pollinators like bees play a key role in one out of every three bites of food we eat. Also, many species of wild plants depend on them as well. Bees are responsible for the production of many seeds, nuts, berries, and fruit, which serve as a vital food source for wild animals.

On the other hand, honey is also very important. It feeds critters like birds, racoons, opossums, and insects will raid beehives for a taste of nutritious honey (and bee larvae). Bees themselves are also a part of the food chain. 

Bees are known for their elaborate hives, but they also help build homes for millions of other insects and animals. Their role as pollinators is vital in the growth of tropical forests, savannah woodlands, and temperate deciduous forests. 

As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and other plants, which serve as food and shelter for several creatures. 

Why are we losing them?

Bees are facing many threats nowadays from different fronts. The interaction between these threats, which have led to nearly 1 in 10 of Europe’s wild bee species facing extinction, makes an unpredictable future for bees and many other pollinators. 

According to Friends of the Earth, these are some of the most lethal threats bees are facing today:

  • Habitat loss: changes in our land use, including insensitive urban development and intensive farming, have caused significant losses and fragmentation of pollinator-friendly habitats. This results in bees losing the diverse food sources they need for a healthy diet. It’s vital that bees have enough flowers to forage – and safe places to use for nesting, among vegetation, the soil and hedges. But since the Second World War, we’ve lost 97% of our wildflower meadows, leaving our bees with little natural habitat. The loss of key habitats on farmland in particular has meant that wildlife, including bees, have become more dependent on protected wildlife sites. 
  • Climate change: As winters become warmer and wetter, and seasons shift there are signs that some wild species may be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Scientists are starting to detect that changes in climate may be disrupting bee nesting behaviour and their emergence after winter. Climate change may also be as affecting the timing of the flowering of plants that bees rely on for food. 
  • Pesticides: Even when applied correctly, pesticides can have adverse impacts on bees by reducing their breeding success and resistance to disease. Scientists have found that exposure to pesticides can impair honey bees’ ability to navigate, bumblebees’ ability to reproduce and solitary bees’ ability to reproduce any young at all. These chemicals are designed to kill unwanted pests, but their toxic properties and widespread use are also harming beneficial insects such as bees. Neonicotinoids are a particularly harmful group of bee-harming pesticides. When a bee feeds on pollen or nectar containing them, their central nervous system can be affected. This affects tasks that bees depend on to survive such as feeding, homing, foraging and reproducing.
  • Pests and disease: Bee keepers guard their honeybee colonies against a range of pests and diseases. These include the varroa mite – a tiny parasitic mite that attaches itself to a honey bee, transmits disease and saps its strength – or fungal diseases that affect the closely knit colony. Evidence shows that some honeybee diseases can spread to wild bumblebees. It is yet unclear if they spread to solitary bees. Managing honeybee health is one way beekeepers can protect wild bees as well as their hives.

EMF: a big and actual reason why we are losing them

Bees, like many other animals, are incredibly susceptible to electromagnetic fields, but little attention has been given to the potential harmful effects of electromagnetic waves on them. According to the paper “Disturbing Honey Bees’ Behavior with Electromagnetic Waves: a Methodology”, written by Dr. Daniel Favre, there are reasonable grounds for admitting that RF-EMF severely impacts the nature, the health of all living organisms (plants, insects, birds, mammals), honeybees included. 

“The latter hymenoptera fly often far from their hive, and rather high. Doing so, they approach RF-EMF of high intensities (due to the presence of masts), are impacted by the electromagnetism, and can no longer find their way. Indeed, it is known that honeybees possess magnetite crystals in their fat body cells and that they present magnetic remanence; these magnetite structures are active parts of the magnetoreception system in honeybees”, stated Favre in his investigation

Dr. Favre also found that, within an hour of exposure, the bees within these hives began to emit something called a “piping signal”, which is a higher-frequency sound made by the bees’ wings when they are agitated or in swarming mode. 

Another study published in 2010, called “Changes in honeybee behaviour and biology under the influence of cellphone radiations” found that colony collapse does occur as a result of exposure to cell phone irradiations. “A significant decline in colony strength (nine comb frames in sham exposed and five frames in exposed colonies) and in the egg laying rate of the queen (144.8 eggs/day in the exposed colony, 376.2 eggs/day in the sham exposed colony) was found. The honey storing ability declined due to loss of returning bees (28.3 bees/min in exposed colony and 41.3 bees/min in sham exposed colony) and at the end of the experiment there was neither honey, nor pollen or brood and bees in the exposed colony resulting in complete loss of the colony.”


Is there a solution?

There are many things that we can not avoid or suddenly change in order to protect bees, but there are many things we could gradually do to start protecting them. If you are a garden enthusiast, you can start by growing a bee friendly garden. Plant a range of flowers in your garden so bees have access to nectar and leave water around for them (if you add a bit of white granulated sugar, better!).

While building your garden, try to go as organic as possible and avoid pesticides, fungicides or herbicides on plants or in your garden. Plants get contaminated and the product will likely reach the bees and kill them. Make sure the plants you buy are not pre-treated with neonics pesticides.

Another way to help is buying raw honey from your local beekeepers. Avoid honey sold in bulk or in the supermarket unless you are sure of its provenance and quality. Meet your beekeepers and check their sustainable beekeeping practices.

Finally, one of the best ways of helping is by spreading awareness. Many people are not aware of the importance of bees to our nature and every living species. By educating people about the dangers they face and how to help them, we can look for more solutions in common to protect them.

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS), known in the past as “Microwave syndrome”, is a clinical syndrome characterized by the presence of a wide spectrum of non-specific multiple organ symptoms, typically including central nervous system symptoms, that occur following the patient’s acute or chronic exposure to electromagnetic fields in the environment or in occupational settings. Numerous studies have shown biological effects at the cellular level of electromagnetic fields (EMF) at magnetic (ELF) and radio-frequency (RF) frequencies in extremely low intensities. Many of the mechanisms described for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) apply with modification to EHS. Repeated exposures result in sensitization and consequent enhancement of response. Many hypersensitive patients appear to have impaired detoxification systems that become overloaded by excessive oxidative stress. EMF can induce changes in calcium signaling cascades, significant activation of free radical processes and overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in living cells as well as altered neurological and cognitive functions and disruption of the blood-brain barrier. Magnetite crystals absorbed from combustion air pollution could have an important role in brain effects of EMF. Autonomic nervous system effects of EMF could also be expressed as symptoms in the cardiovascular system. Other common effects of EMF include effects on skin, microvasculature, immune and hematologic systems. It is concluded that the mechanisms underlying the symptoms of EHS are biologically plausible and that many organic physiologic responses occur following EMF exposure. Patients can have neurologic, neuro-hormonal and neuro-psychiatric symptoms following exposure to EMF as a consequence of neural damage and over-sensitized neural responses. More relevant diagnostic tests for EHS should be developed. Exposure limits should be lowered to safeguard against biologic effects of EMF. Spread of local and global wireless networks should be decreased, and safer wired networks should be used instead of wireless, to protect susceptible members of the public. Public places should be made accessible for electrohypersensitive individuals.

Typical phones are not a thing now, we are using more complex and sophisticated devices that require more power to work and provide all the functions we are giving it now, bigger batteries, more potent antennas, and a bigger capacity to receive and transfer data. With the creation of the cell phone and all the doubts about the harmful effects caused by its radiation, some products with the title of “anti-radiation” have entered the market and claim to be able to counteract it. Today, we will tell you more about them.

The problem of electromagnetic pollution, although it is not new, is very little known by most people. However, a vast majority of people who have heard about it may feel the urgency to protect themselves and look for solutions, and today the market abounds with options that claim to be effective.

These solutions are mostly directed to mobile phones. Today, these popular devices are widely used, but since their creation, there have been doubts and concerns about the radiation they emit and its possible effects on health.

Nowadays, you will find products such as stickers or cases for smartphones on the internet and in many places. The creators of these products claim that they block electromagnetic radiation, but we have news for you: Most of the time, this is not even remotely true.

Of all these “anti-radiation” products that you see on the market, 90% have no scientific basis, so it has been proven that they are fraudulent and have no function other than aesthetics. However, there are another 10% of products that are made with materials capable of blocking radiation, but they have quite questionable effects. Today, we will especially talk about this 10%.

The anti-radiation approach

As it reads, an anti-radiation product is (or is intended to be) a shield that radically blocks radiation. While the purpose is to protect yourself from electromagnetic pollution, the approach of completely blocking it is not appropriate. 

“Why?”, you might wonder. The answer is that the blocking will always be partial and, therefore, there will always be a harmful emission coming out of the device. This is dangerous because users have a false assurance of using the device without risk. People with Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS) admit that they cannot use these solutions because they continue to be exposed to the harmful radiation that the phone is still emitting. 

The cell phone indeed generates radiation that is necessary to and for its operation. The truth is that the radiation generated by the cell phone is a normal consequence of the operation of the device per se, first by the battery that powers it, then by the microwaves that allow it to connect to the different signals it uses to establish communication. Although today there are standards that regulate it, as we will see later, these maximum limits, according to various studies, have shown to be very permissible and there are still long-term cumulative effects.

It was for this reason that for 20 years the market was flooded with anti-radiation solutions, such as possible shields to block this radiation completely, and even some of these solutions claim to block up to 99 or 100% of the radiation. Can this be true? Logically thinking, it’s not possible. If a product were to radically and completely block cell phone radiation, there would be no possible way for the device to work, as it would not receive the signal correctly and thus would no longer serve its purpose.

The anti-radiation covers that you will find on the market are made of a material that, indeed, blocks the waves. But this generates:

  • Failures in the transmission and reception of the mobile signal due to electromagnetic interference and, therefore, poor or no connectivity at times.
  • Increased heating of the device because it requires more battery power to connect to a signal.
  • The use of more energy also produces a worrying increase in radiation emission.
  • It can shorten battery life.
  • It shortens the lifespan of the device as a result of abnormal operation and unnecessary heating.
  • It generates static problems in the users and electrically charges them.
  • Interference to other nearby devices.

However, even with all these difficulties, the device works. So the total blockage they promise is a myth.

The forced increase of the SAR level and its effects on your body

All phones have average radiation that they emit and have higher peaks when the phone has difficulties connecting to the network. This peak is the one that is established as the maximum emission level of the device and is the one taken as a reference so that the phone can be commercialized.

The SAR is the test used internationally and by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) in the United States to approve a certain device for its proper commercialization. The maximum SAR that a telephone can emit is 1.6 W / Kg. Average cell phones, such as iPhone, Samsung, among others, have variable average emissions which peaks should not exceed such value.

This level, considered to be the “safe level” for the use of the device, has been found to increase alarmingly when using anti-radiation covers. What happens is that, by completely blocking the waves on one side of the device, these covers cause your cell phone to work harder to find a signal, which will end up producing greater amounts of radiation that will definitely affect you.

“In telecommunications laboratories, it is known that these anti-radiation covers end up increasing the SAR emission level of the phone alarmingly because it makes the phone work harder to connect, which is not ideal. On the internet, on the channels and portals of the manufacturers of these products, you can see that these products are offered and tested using meters and they show how, in effect, the covers block radiation; But what is not seen is how the radiation flux changes where the meter is not directed. This creates false security for the user, who thinks that will not be exposed to radiation, when not only is he exposed, but he is receiving much greater amounts ”, says Joaquín Machado, CEO of Noxtak and EMF researcher.

Likewise, the Spanish expert in Geobiology and habitat radiation, Joan Carles López Sancho, stated in an interview with gigahertz.es that this protection does not meet expectations and does not reduce the electromagnetic pollution emitted by the device to practically nothing. The researcher says that “these covers are lined inside with a tiny fabric of silver or copper wire, which what it does is undo the radioelectric wave, and if we enclose the entire mobile phone with this material it will not emit a signal, and which is more dangerous, if we obstruct the development of the call, the device would emit more power to make the call ”.

It is important to note that some of these cases also accumulate static, which ends up causing physical discomfort to users in the areas close to where they have the phone.

Finally, you will also find covers whose design is focused on absorbing heat, completely ignoring that the problem is not heating, but the athermic effects of radiation, such as the artificial polarization of the wave.

Regarding the protection of the body, another myth that surrounds these products is that they claim to protect certain parts of the body in a localized way, such as the head, torso, etc. Is this possible? Let’s better explain it with a simple example: Think of a typical umbrella in the middle of a storm. You don’t mind getting wet, but all the dirty water you could get. You are using the umbrella, and although it is preventing the dirty water from falling on some parts of your body, you keep getting soaked on other parts; so you get dirty anyway.

An aircraft is constantly generating electromagnetic fields due to its electrical, communications, and positioning systems. Flight crews, especially pilots, are exposed to elevated levels of these magnetic fields and cosmic radiation. Having this in mind, DARPA (U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) started a two-year project to investigate whether the pilots are being harmed and up to which point.

Key questions:

Are pilots being harmed by the electromagnetic field accumulated in the cockpit? Could this damage lead to accidents or crashes? Is this also affecting the aircraft? How is this applicable to commercial flights and crews? Is there a way to protect them from these emissions and avoid further problems?

Officials of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are warning that pilots’ ability to think may be harmed by the radiofrequency and electromagnetic fields emitted from the electronics in their aircraft. The problem could be making pilots so disoriented that they crash their planes, fears DARPA, the Pentagon’s pet research agency stated for Forbes.

“Current cockpits are flooded with radio frequency (RF) noise from on-board emissions, communication links, and navigation electronics, including strong electromagnetic (EM) fields from audio headsets and helmet tracking technologies,” warns a new DARPA research project. “Pilots often report minor cognitive performance challenges during flight, and from 1993 to 2013, spatial disorientation in US Air Force pilots accounted for 72 Class A mishaps, 101 deaths, and 65 aircraft lost.”

Some background investigations on this subject

Back in 2001, Gary C. Butler and Joyce S. Nicholas published an article called Magnetic Fields on the Flight Deck, oriented to airline pilots. In this article, they opened by saying that airline pilots operate within an environment that exposes them to magnetic fields, as well as cosmic radiation, sound, vibration, reduced atmospheric pressure, mild hypoxia, low humidity, and circadian dysrhythmia. “These occupational exposures may physiologically challenge the long-term health of airline pilots. Given the complexity of the environment and the possibility of synergistic effects, learning the amount of each exposure is necessary for evaluating any potential health risk”.

In 1998, they carried out an investigation especially focused on magnetic fields in several airplane types. They found that magnetic field strength varies with stages of flight, location within the airplane, and type of airplane. In general, the magnetic field strength at passenger positions tends to increase as one approaches the front of the airplane, suggesting that exposures to pilots on the flight deck might be higher than exposures to passengers. 

Then, in November of 2002, the Epidemiology journal published the article Cohort Mortality Study of German Cockpit Crew, made between 1960 and 1997. In this article, Hajo Zeeb, Maria Blettner, Gaël P. Hammer, and Ingo Langner, stated that the crew in civil aviation are exposed to several potential health hazards, among them cosmic ionizing radiation. 

The goal of this cohort study among the cockpit crew was to assess the influence of occupational and other factors on mortality. To achieve this, all pilots and other cockpit personnel of two German airlines were traced through registries and other sources for the period 1960-1997. They calculated the standardized mortality ratios, with German population rates as the reference; estimated the individual radiation dose based on individual job histories, and assessed dose-response trends in stratified and regression analyses. 

“We compiled a cohort of 6061 male cockpit personnel, yielding 105,037 person-years of observation. The maximum estimated individual radiation dose was 80.5 mSv. Among 255 deaths overall, there were 76 cancer deaths… A slight increase was seen in brain cancer. Employment duration was associated with the all-cancer mortality in Poisson regression analyses”, the investigators stated.

DARPA’s investigation

DARPA’s Impact of Cockpit Electro-Magnetics on Aircrew Neurology (ICEMAN) is a two-year project that aims to determine whether radio waves and magnetic fields are harming pilots. This is based on previous DARPA researches that found that “human brains sense magnetic fields, like those used by animals for navigation, and that this process is ‘jammed’ (i.e., disrupted) by radio waves (RF), impacting brainwaves and behavior. Furthermore, recent findings were the first to show that even weak RF fields and ‘earth strength’ magnetic fields have measurable, reproducible effects on human brainwaves and unconscious behavior in a controlled environment.”

Phase I of ICEMAN will determine how much radio frequency and electromagnetic field noise are present in cockpits. Phase II will examine the effects of RF and EM noise on the human body. Researchers will be asked to design sensors to measure these effects and to find ways to mitigate them.

According to Forbes, the U.S. military fears that some crashes may have been caused by electromagnetic fields. But currently, there is no way to be sure about this suspect. “It has been hypothesized that the cockpit RF and EM fields may influence cognitive performance including task saturation, misprioritization, complacency, and Spatial Disorientation,” DARPA notes. “However, EM fields and radio waves in cockpits are not currently monitored, little effort has been made to shield pilots from these fields, and the potential impacts of these fields on cognition have not been assessed.”

With time, cockpit electronics have become more powerful than we can imagine. As an example of this, DARPA notes that current tactical audio headsets project magnetic fields up to 10 times earth strength. And the high-powered radars are not the biggest concern now, as DARPA affirms that pilots of cutting-edge aircraft, such as the F-35 stealth fighter, are encased in an electronic cocoon of powerful sensors, audiovisual displays, and special high-tech helmets. 

DARPA stated that this problem affects commercial as well as military pilots. “If this research and development effort reveals negative impacts of cockpit EM/RF environments on human cognitive function or physiological sensor performance, it is expected to generate interest from the commercial airline industry as well as other industries in which humans are exposed to similar EM/RF conditions.” 

Could the aircraft be affected too? 

We know artificial EMF can also affect the functionality of electronic devices, such as the ones used by pilots for orientation and communication purposes. That’s part of the answer to why you are not allowed to use your cellphone while flying.

The planes nowadays are well-shielded to avoid any further interference due to devices working inside them, they are designed to work depending on all the heavy-duty technologies and electronics needed. You might even find some airplanes with Wi-Fi now. Though It is uncertain if the lifecycle of many of those devices could be longer if these electromagnetic fields get to decrease at some point.

But even if the planes are designed for this, the human body is not, and that’s the increasing concern not only for military pilots but also for commercial pilots, crews, and constant passengers. 

My conclusions

According to my personal experience, I met several pilots with certain levels of EHS (Electrohypersensitivity), but they just got used to living with regular headaches (solved with a common aspirin), and certain levels of irritability, stress, and fatigue; so they usually have the habit of consuming more energy drinks, from coffee to stronger compounds. So, what we need to understand are the typical common symptoms they experience and study them so we can relate them later with the real affection they might be facing.

In science, the change of variables is key to finding answers and avoiding wrong conclusions. If we don’t include the variable of artificial EMF, we are not taking into account all the aspects affecting pilots and crew members. We need to be aware of all the changes in variables. Otherwise, we will miss the big picture and we would possibly never understand what’s happening. 

We already know the common symptoms caused by artificial EMF, the biological effects, and long-term health risks. My concern now is not the exposure from outside the plane or the transmission of radio frequencies (RF) between the plane and the closest airports. In this case, the variable that is changing continuously is the near field exposure from microwave radiation. All the passengers and crew are using cellphones with active Bluetooth and WiFi connections (microwave radiation), and frequently some passengers reject the suggestion to put the cellphone in airplane mode, so they leave it active, which increase the emissions from the cellphones with low-frequency fields as they try to connect to a non-existing cell phone tower nearby. So, can you imagine the amount of near field exposure inside a plane nowadays? 

Now, we can connect to a WIFI hotspot in most commercial flights, so the plane is exponentially saturated with a huge amount of microwave radiation. I’m not saying this will harm the plane functioning, because the manufacturer prevents this from happening with very isolated protocols to sensitive electronic devices and computers inside the plane, and with the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) test, of course. 

But a very subtle emission of microwave radiation from WiFi is potentially harmful to us because our cells are much more sensitive and vulnerable than technology. Have in mind that even when the EMC test says it’s a “safe” emission, it means safe for other nearby technologies or free of excessive Electromagnetic Interference (EMI). However, the electrosmog that is harming us is subtle, is made of electromagnetic disturbances that spread with WiFi/Bluetooth; and inside a plane, which is basically a metallic box, these artificial polarized microwaves behave with more unbalances and disturbances. 

Crew members are continuously exposed to this, and that’s only in commercial flights. But F-35 Air Force pilots like the ones mentioned above, are fully immersed in this type of industrial electrosmog with the military standard requiring more technology, which is harming these pilot’s long-term health. And probably in the very short-term too, reducing their capability to fly calmed and fully focused.

What I mentioned before about astronauts in space, also applies to most air force pilots because of the modernization of the aircraft. But we can’t forget commercial flights, in which crew members are getting more and more exposed than ever before. 

Like I said so many times in the past: electrosmog control should not be a luxury, it definitely is a necessity in today’s world. We have to raise awareness that electrosmog is an environmental toxin that harms our bodies, the environment, and natural ecosystems; so it’s time every industry starts to take it seriously at the moment of creating new technologies, trying new practices, and especially when exposing humans to it.

Dr. Rea’s years of investigation and positions on environmental sensitivities paved the way for many new investigations nowadays.

Dr. William James Rea was a thoracic, cardiovascular, and general surgeon with an added interest in the environmental aspects of health and disease. He was born in Jefferson, Ohio, on February 2, 1935, and passed away at 83 on August 16, 2018, in Dallas, Texas. 

He was the Director of the Environmental Health Center Dallas and the President of the American Environmental Health Foundation. He formerly held the First World Professorial Chair in Environmental Medicine at the Robens Institute at the University of Surrey, in Guildford, Surrey, England, as well as other teaching appointments.

Dr. Rea published many articles on Cardiovascular Surgery and Environmental Medicine and he went on to write 10 books which included medical textbooks on Environmental Medicine. He also wrote two books on electromagnetic frequency (EMF), which he completed before passing. He also coauthored a consumer title focused on the effects of the environment on health. 

Environmental medicine

Rea was one of the foremost practitioners of environmental medicine. At his former clinic, the Environmental Health Center-Dallas, no cell phones are allowed and the air is constantly filtered. The walls and floors are made of porcelain because, according to Rea, there are no fumes and particulates, and other non-reactive surfaces such as unvarnished wood. The clinic has been open since 1974.

Dr. William Rea treated more than 30,000 patients over 40 years. He developed a comprehensive protocol for treatment and diagnosis. His approach aimed at decreasing the “total body load” of all toxins and toxic chemicals, injections to neutralize mycotoxins, avoidance of foods and chemicals to which patients may have become sensitized, parenteral and oral nutrition, sauna treatments, exercise, and massage. 

In a 2016 paper published by Dr. Rea, he described the “coherence phenomenon” and how it ties together exposures to mold, pollen, dust, food, chemicals, and electromagnetic fields. As mentioned above, his treatment center used a less-polluted, controlled environment that provides more precise diagnosis and treatment. 

His studies on chemical sensitivity

Chemical sensitivity is the adverse reaction to ambient doses of toxic and non-toxic chemicals contained in air, food, and water. The history of food and chemical sensitivity stretches back over 2000 years to when Hippocrates described people who were made ill by certain food and drink after they fasted or just could not tolerate a food that others could.

“Environmentally oriented physicians, allergists, nutritionists, physicians in preventative and occupational medicine, and medical students will find that Chemical Sensitivity is truly a magnum opus in the field of toxicology and will prove to be a classic reference”, Dr. Rea said.

His position about EMF

According to Dr. Rea, Electromagnetic sensitivity is an adverse reaction to the specific ambient electromagnetic field (EMF) frequencies below the heating level. This quantum field involves fewer particles and has an uncertainty described by the Heisenberg relation.

Dr. Rea told in an interview with the National Center for Biotechnology Information when asked if EMFs has become a problem, “that is becoming the explored, unexplored field. The body runs on EMF, so it is not surprising that these things that disturb EMF can cause problems. Frequencies that will help some people will not help others or will make them worse. For example, we have seen the high-power-lines, aerial antennas, or smart meters cause problems.”

Dr. Rea was tracking back the effects of EMF in people who manifested endocrine disruption, “they manifest just like any other endocrine tumor or endocrine entity that is poured in, like steroids, or so on. Of course, there is always weakness and fatigue”.

Dr. Rea also affirmed that, according to his investigations, 80% of the people who have electrohypersensitivity have some kind of other chemical sensitivity, like organic pesticide problems or mycotoxin sensitivity.

Wearable technologies are one of the top technology trends and will still be for some years to come, but what are the advantages and disadvantages of our increasing dependence on them?

Every day we are using more and more technologies around and ON us. Home appliances are getting smarter, media and entertainment nowadays are fully connected to the internet, and our phones and computers are almost necessary to keep our work routines and socialize. But that’s not it: as we are increasingly looking for ways to measure and improve our well-being, we started using smart wearable devices.

Today’s watches are just not watches, and they started to do more than “telling” time. Our new smartwatches do fitness tracking, health monitoring, and give users quick access to notifications and what’s going on in their smartphones. If you are someone passionate about IoT and well-being, you should definitely get one.

But, as great as they are, not everything could be entirely good. So we will summarize some of the top pros and cons of using wearable devices in this article.

The advantages: why should you get one?


  • Promotes a Healthy Lifestyle

Most smartwatches can track activity, nutrition, and calories burned. Some of them can even work as a pedometer, monitor heart rate, and blood pressure. All of this information can help you have constant control of your overall health and  reach your fitness goals faster.

For example, the newest smartwatches have lots of sensors that make fitness tracking easier. Some even have dedicated workout modes to give you more accurate measures and goals.


  • Quick Access to your Smartphone

When connected to your smartphone, most smartwatches show notifications so users can have quick access to them. You can receive email notifications, texts, calendar alerts, news alerts, and so much more. You can even receive social media notifications with no need to take out your phone from your bag or pocket.

And If you’re the type of person who’s always on the go, you won’t ever miss a call again. When you’re outside, you may not be able to hear your phone ringing, but the vibration from a smartwatch is easily noticeable and can alert you that you’ve received a call.


  • Makes your life easier

High-end smartwatches usually offer features that are truly convenient. Some have NFC that will allow you to make cashless payments. Others have LTE cellular capabilities, which will enable you to send texts and make calls even if you don’t have your smartphone nearby.

When it comes to entertainment, there’s really no point of comparison between a smartwatch and an ordinary watch. You can watch a full-length movie on a smartwatch without any problem. A smartwatch also allows you to connect earphones so you can listen to your favorite music anytime.


  • It’s fashionable and customizable

You can change the dial/watch face of a smartwatch every day. It is stylish and will allow you to match the watch face according to your mood and preference. You can wear a smartwatch at work, at school, on a dinner date, or while meeting an important client. It will also blend well with your outfits, whether casual or formal.

The disadvantages: very few and very important


  • Tech addiction

Just as with any other smart device we use daily, there’s a risk we get too dependent and addicted to its use. You’ll get easily distracted and will probably be too focused on the constant monitoring or notifications coming through the device. So be careful!

Also, you have to be careful with your stress levels. The number of apps, the constant monitoring, and health estimates may increase your stress levels and cause the opposite effect you’re trying to avoid. 


  • Poor performance and battery life

Just to be clear: smartwatches are great. However, you have to consider this kind of device will never be better in terms of performance, capabilities, and connectivity than an actual smartphone. So don’t get too used to use a thousand apps constantly there, you’ll get flustered. 

Also, one of the main disadvantages of a smartwatch is that they typically can be used 1 to 2 days after a full charge. Some don’t even last for one day, especially if you use power-hungry features. 


  • EMF radiation: the biggest of problems

Yes. We talk a lot about this, but it is inevitable: every device that uses electricity, especially those who can connect to wireless networks, generate artificial EMF and can cause long-term effects on your health.

Have you heard about the FitBit case? During the last five years, numerous users have reported experiencing physical side effects from continuously wearing the devices. Some of the most common ones include feeling dizzy and experiencing frequent headaches that don’t go away even with medication.

Others report heart palpitations, skin rashes, and erratic pulse rhythms. Some users also report having difficulty falling and staying asleep while wearing the device, leaving them feeling fatigued throughout the day.

Fitbit has maintained that, despite their devices emitting radiation, the levels are insufficient to cause bodily harm to users. According to them, all their devices are compliant with the existing FCC regulations on Bluetooth BLE. They also state that the power output of any Fitbit device is less than 1% compared to that produced by a cell phone.

“What’s even more disconcerting is that the measurements used in the FCC regulations are based on a cell phone kept at a 6-inch distance from its user. Fitbits are used directly against the body and for as long as 24 hours in some cases”Educate EMF stated.

Then, how do I properly use a wearable device? 

First of all, don’t let yourself be consumed by the many functions a smartwatch (or whatever device) has. Just like with your cell phone, video consoles, TV, or any other device, be wise and avoid excessive use. 

And yes, you should be protected from the emissions generated by a device you are wearing every time, every day. Smartwatches use microwaves and radiofrequency to connect to the network, to other devices, and monitor many things in your body.

NASA’s Human Research Program has been unfolding answers for over a decade about what happens to the human body out there. Since the birth of the Space Age 60 years ago, astronauts have progressively gone into space for longer periods of time since the International Space Station has been in operation. 

Today, the “privatization” of space has raised aspirations towards other celestial bodies, there are even talks of having permanent human settlements on the moon, Mars, and other planets of the solar system in future decades, initially for experimentation, mining, and with time “colonize space”. 

This entails a deeper understanding of the human body, of the interaction of our body’s magnetic field, the earth’s magnetic field, and its relationship with gravity; what happens to our bodies when we are in weightlessness, what happens with cosmic radiation, and, finally, what happens with artificial radiation from our own devices, which are already causing health problems on earth today.

Key questions:

Is the earth’s magnetic field part of our body’s electromagnetic balance? If so, what happens when we, as a species, travel through the solar system? And when we reach other planets with magnetic fields of different intensity, what is the effect? In a state of weightlessness in space, are we more vulnerable to artificial non-ionizing radiation emanating from our electrified transmissions and devices? Preliminary studies on astronauts show us that there are palpable biological effects for astronauts, are those part of the many negative biological effects produced by electrosmog emissions from telecommunications transmission equipment of the space station?

It is highly possible. And given the evidence and the types of biological effects described by NASA in its astronauts, we can find similarities in the observations of medical studies carried out on non-ionizing radiation from artificial sources, which are evident in more than 4,000 scientific papers.

As NASA would say “Space is a dangerous, unfriendly place”. Once you are out there, you’ll be isolated from family and friends, exposed to a type of radiation that could increase your lifetime risk for cancer, surviving on a diet high in freeze-dried food, requiring daily exercise to keep your muscles and bones from deteriorating, and mandatory confinement with very few people in a metallic tube.

Today’s astronauts are going deeper into space on longer missions, and, with the entry of private industry into the sector, space tourism could soon allow regular vacationers to experience microgravity. Orbiting the Earth, the Moon and even Mars will be possible soon, so we could say the future of space travel is bright. But what about the effects of space travel on the human body? 

Astronauts, the only ones who have experienced these conditions so far, face many hazards in space that can do strange things to the human body; and different experiments in them have shown that radiation, lack of gravity, and isolation can all have negative impacts on the body. 

Effects on body functions

NASA offers several warnings for people who are preparing for space travel based on what researchers know about the human body in space. A lack of gravity doesn’t only cause bone and muscle loss, but transitioning to different gravity fields can also affect spatial orientation, head-eye, and hand-eye coordination, balance, and locomotion. It can even cause motion sickness.

As NASA cautions, if you don’t exercise and eat right, you will lose muscle strength, endurance, and experience cardiovascular deconditioning since it does not take effort to float through space. Fluids are another tricky factor since bodily fluids shift upwards in space, which can make your legs temporarily skinny and put pressure on your eyes that cause vision problems.

Brain effects

According to an article published by Space.com, astronauts have reported issues with vision after traveling to space and some medical evaluations on Earth have revealed that their optic nerves swell and some experience retinal hemorrhage and other structural changes to their eyes. Scientists suspect that these vision issues are caused by increased “intracranial pressure,” or pressure in the head, during spaceflight. 

Chelsea Gohd, from Space.com, interviewed Dr. Larry Kramer, a radiologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, who stated that researchers found evidence that this pressure does increase in microgravity. “In this study, the team performed brain MRI (magnetic resonance imaging, a technique that uses specialized scanners to image parts of the body using magnetic fields) on 11 astronauts (10 men and one woman) both before and after they traveled to space and for up to a year after their return. These MRI images showed that, with long-duration exposure to microgravity, the brain swells, and cerebrospinal fluid, which surrounds the brain and spinal cord, increases in volume. 

Additionally, Kramer and his colleagues found that the pituitary gland also changes with exposure to microgravity. They found that the gland became compressed, it changed in height and shape which is a sign of increased pressure in the head. 

Finally, the article states that the researchers also found that the swelling of the brain alongside the compressing pituitary gland and the pressure in the head, was still present a year after the astronauts returned from space. That duration suggests that these effects could be long-lasting. 

Long-term effects of space radiation on health

The most dangerous aspect of space travel, according to NASA, is space radiation. For example, a vehicle traveling to Mars and a habitat on Mars will need significant protective shielding, but even building the strongest walls, they are futile against some types of space radiation. 

“On the space station, astronauts receive over ten times the radiation than what’s naturally occurring on Earth. Our planet’s magnetic field and atmosphere protect us from harsh cosmic radiation, but without that, you are more exposed to the treacherous radiation”, states NASA in their Human Research Program spreadsheet. 

So, above Earth’s protective EMF shielding, radiation exposure potentially increases the cancer risk. This type of radiation can also damage the central nervous system, with both acute effects and later consequences, manifesting itself as altered cognitive function, reduced motor function, and behavioral changes. 

At last, space radiation can also cause nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and fatigue. Astronauts could develop degenerative tissue diseases such as cataracts, cardiac, and circulatory diseases. 

A summary of the effects and an unexplainable fact

The researchers highlight six biological changes in all astronauts during space flight: oxidative stress (an excessive accumulation of free radicals in the body’s cells), DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunction, changes in gene regulation, modifications in the length of telomeres (the ends of chromosomes, which shorten with age), and alterations in the intestinal flora.

As reported by the MIT Technology Review, “Of these six changes, the biggest and most surprising to scientists was mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria play a fundamental role in the production of the chemical energy necessary to keep cells functional and, by extension, tissues, and organs. The researchers found irregular mitochondrial functioning in dozens of astronauts and were able to describe these changes extensively thanks to new genomic and proteomic techniques.”

Afshin Beheshti, a NASA bioinformatician and lead author of one of the studies, believes that mitochondrial suppression explains how many of the problems astronauts experience (such as immune system deficiencies, disrupted circadian rhythm, and organ complications) are related to each other holistically, as they all depend on the same metabolic pathways.

The MIT Technology Review states that there are other investigations focused on the problems observed at the genetic level. For example, the study of the Kelly twins showed that Scott’s telomeres had lengthened in space before returning to normal or even shorter lengths shortly after their return to Earth. Telomeres are supposed to shorten with age, so lengthening makes little sense, and the study of twins did not provide enough data to draw real conclusions about why that happened and what the effects had been.

What does this mean for future space expeditions?

According to Mark Springel, a research assistant in the Department of Pathology at Boston Children’s Hospital, with our current technology, a manned mission to Mars would take more than two years, and by conservative estimates, simply getting to Mars might take 6 to 8 months. Radiation measurements recorded by NASA’s Curiosity rover during its transit to Mars suggest that with today’s technology, astronauts would be exposed to a minimum of 660 ± 120 millisieverts (a measure of radiation dosage) throughout a round trip. Because NASA’s career exposure limit for astronauts is only slightly greater at 1000 millisieverts, this recent data is cause for great concern.

“The recent radiation data aside, the longest consecutive stay by a human in space is only 438 days, and it’s not completely understood how the human body might respond to a trip to Mars and back. The effects of long-term spaceflight may be very nuanced, and this calls for new disciplines that can address the issue of adapting humans to conditions that we were not intended to endure. Frequent exercise, proper nutrition, and pharmacological therapy are three strategies used to combat the deconditioning process, yet some reduction in fitness is inevitable”, stated Springel in the Harvard University blog

Scientists who design future space missions have a big challenge ahead: develop new technologies that can overcome the physiological limitations of humans traveling in space for indefinite periods. “Much emphasis on research today is to develop technologies to get to Mars faster, generate artificial gravity, and reduce radiation exposure. While pop culture’s depiction of space travel may largely be fictitious, it may be science fiction that one day enables humans to venture deeper into “the final frontier”, finished Springel.

My conclusions 

To achieve successful and longer manned expeditions to outer space, we still have to research and develop the proper technologies to guarantee the safety and well-being of the astronauts while being exposed to microgravity and space radiation. As Springel would suggest, fiction movies and our current fantasies could be the first step to start exploring our possibilities, to find out new things, and start working on developing what we consider impossible now. 

Also, we still have to find out how to control the artificial emissions generated by the current technologies used by astronauts in order to avoid any further issues on their health, considering they are not protected by the natural earth’s EMF, which keeps the balance and the natural conditions our bodies are used to. We have to consider that, even inside the earth’s natural magnetic fields, humans are experimenting several biological effects, genotoxic damages, and severe oxidative stress due to these artificial radiation. So, have you wondered how could these effects be in the absence of a magnetic field such as the earth’s? That’s a big question!

For example, radio waves are the only way to communicate with a spacecraft out there, so antennas and propagation are two core elements in spacecraft engineering. We have to keep in mind that radio waves are used for a wide spectrum of applications in space exploration, like telecommunications, observation, and radio-navigation. To accomplish all of these purposes without implying bigger problems to astronauts, we need to think about designing special antennas, properly measure the propagation effects, and find a possible way to shield them from those waves.

As technology keeps going further, It’s very likely that new spacecraft models use higher microwave frequencies and, as the data to transmit is bigger and heavier, they are more oriented to use millimetre waves. This means that new astronauts, including the ones who traveled in SpaceX ‘s Falcon 9, will be surrounded by more microwave connectivity  instead of simple radio signals, like in previous vehicles and rockets. Simultaneously, Bluetooth technology is likely to be used to interconnect several systems inside spacesuits. So, summarizing, we have a scenario where artificial EMF exposure in astronauts is very different to what we have already experienced before, and we don’t know the possible consequences yet. 

According to the European Space Agency, electromagnetic compatibility has long been a crucial performance issue; and, as our previous article stated, electromagnetic interference might become more important with the introduction of next-generation broadband telecom satellites that incorporate multiple spot beams operating at higher frequencies, like the project of installing 4G on the moon.

These are all things we have yet to discover, and we are probably many years away from discovering the best ways to protect our space explorers and get the desired results on manned expeditions. But to keep going forward on our space ventures safely, more investigation, developing, and willingness to try different solutions are totally worth it.

Definitely, I think there’s a way to develop more rigorous standards in electronic and electrical engineering to ensure that the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle is, indeed, applied. On the other hand, I think it’s necessary to keep researching, learning, and developing more around technologies like SPIRO to work with a new scientifical vision of materials that can work as passive filters that don’t block transmissions but make them better and biocompatible.

Once again, I think we need to create a reasonable and strict standard for all the companies that are joining the spatial race, so they could develop technologies with an electro-clean vision and electrosmog-free systems.
